Storm Damaged Fence in Providence: What to Do and Who Pays

What to do when a nor'easter, tropical storm or fallen tree takes down your fence in Providence, RI: fast repair, insurance and neighbor trees.

Storm Damaged Fence in Providence: What to Do and Who Pays

If a storm took your fence down, photograph the damage and whatever caused it, then call your insurer and a fence company before anything is moved. Providence gets nor'easters in the cold months and the remains of tropical storms in late summer and fall, and both bring down limbs and solid panels.

Half my fence blew down. Who can fix it fast and what will it cost?

Call (401) 356-3395 with a photo and the length that is down. A fallen section with snapped posts counts as a major repair, $900 to $2,500 by national 2026 figures. After a widespread storm the schedule fills quickly, so call early.

My dogs are in the yard and the fence is open to the road. What can be done right away?

Ask us for a temporary closure. Standing posts can be braced and the opening closed with a temporary panel until the permanent repair is done. Say on the first call that there are pets, children or a pool behind the gap. That moves the closure to the front of the job.

Is there an extra charge for emergency or weekend fence repair?

Some companies charge more for after-hours work and some do not do it. Ask before you agree to a visit. Closing the gap first and doing the full repair on a regular working day generally costs less.

Does homeowners insurance cover a fence knocked down by a storm or a tree?

Many policies cover a fence under other structures, but your policy wording, your deductible and the cause of the damage decide it. A small repair can come in under the deductible. Only your insurer or agent can tell you. We provide a written, itemized estimate for the claim.

My neighbor's tree fell on my fence. Whose insurance pays?

Usually your own policy covers your own fence, wherever the tree was rooted. That can change if the owner had been warned that the tree was dead or unsafe. Put the question to your insurer. If the same material is still made, we can replace just the crushed sections.

The insurer offered much less than the repair quote because the fence is old. Now what?

An insurer may pay what an old fence was worth, not what a new one costs. Ask for the adjuster's figures in writing and reply with an itemized estimate. If the difference remains, repairing only the damaged part is often the workable answer.

The storm knocked the fence down and my neighbor says it is mine. Who pays?

It depends on where the fence stands. Rhode Island General Laws section 34-10-10 says a partition fence between improved lands is maintained in equal halves by the two owners. A fence fully inside one lot belongs to that owner. A land surveyor, not a fence company, settles where the line is. Our shared fence page has more.
